Happy New Year to all our fencers and to anyone thinking about fencing! For people new to fencing, please feel free to come out to our Open House which is happening on Monday, January 4th, 2010 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. If you are thinking about signing up for fencing but want to learn more, or you are just curious, come on out on Monday and have a look around. Our coaches will be around to talk to you about fencing and you will be able to register for our programs at that time. We are located in the gymnasium behind St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, at 61 Willow Street, Waterloo. For more detailed directions check out our map link at the top of this page.
With the New Year comes the time to register for the new term. Registrations will be accepted up to the first class of your program. Late registrants will need to talk to Jen. Here are the programs we will be offering that start in January:
Mini-Fence:
For kids six to ten years old: a fun class to introduce the sport of fencing with the use of plastic swords and masks. The goal of this program is to instill a love of sport and fencing at an early age.
This program runs for ten weeks starting Monday, January 11th, 2010 at 6:00 pm. Classes are one hour in length. Program cost is $140 per child. All fencing related equipment is supplied.
Beginner Fencing:
For those with no fencing experience, aged ten and up. The sport of fencing is introduced by learning foot-work, blade-work and basic bouting in a structured class.
Starting Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 at 6:00 pm, this six week program runs for 90 minutes a night. Program cost is $140 per fencer. All fencing related equipment will be provided.
Recreational Fencing:
For those fencers who have some fencing experience or have completed the beginner program. Practices are semi-structured to provide the most enjoyment for all participants. Participants are encouraged to compete at local (Ontario) tournaments, but this is not a requirement. The goal is to enjoy a lifetime of Fencing.
Starting Monday, January 4th, 2010 Recreational Fencing runs both Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. This program runs from the beginning of January until the end of April. Program cost is $165 for the four month session. Although we have equipment available for rent, participants are strongly encouraged to purchase their own equipment as equipment is not supplied for this program (you can purchase most equipment you will need for the cost of two terms rental fees). Please talk to Jennifer Caslick to arrange equipment rentals or to register for any programs. Please talk to Jonathon Holtz or Todd Caslick if you are considering purchasing equipment.
The Competitive Fencing season continues and more events will be posted soon. Wheelchair Fencing is still available on request. Please talk to Jonathon Holtz if you are interested in competing; talk to Jennifer Caslick if you are interested in Wheelchair Fencing.
For participants in all programs, please wear long athletic pants, t-shirt, and non-marking athletic shoes. Water is also recommended.
A $15 fee is included in the price quoted for each program. This fee registers the fencer with the provincial and federal fencing organizations — the OFA and CFF respectively – with which Excelsior is affiliated. This fee is only required to be paid once per year during the fencing calendar (September to August).
For more information please contact Jennifer Caslick at (519) 745-1381.
