Most of you know that there is a group of fencers from Excelsior heading to Boston for the Pomme de Terre fencing tournament in June. The six fencers heading stateside are: Deb Briggs, Jennifer Caslick, Todd Caslick, Jackie Fountain, Jon Holtz and Julian Twardus. The tournament is on June 19th and 20th, so it is fast approaching.

This is the first of what Excelsior would like to make a regular occurrence: sending our fencers to competitions across North America. Next year there is a North America Cup tournament scheduled for Detroit in March. We are considering trips to large tournaments in Washington D.C. (Cherry Blossom) and Boston (Pomme de Terre again). Please keep an eye on the website for information regarding these trips in the future.

Westdale Fencing Club in Hamilton, Ontario is hosting a Just-For-Fun foil fencing tournament on Saturday, October 24th. This tourney is a great event for beginners and has five different age categories so younger kids don’t have to feel overwhelmed fencing adults. If you are planning to compete, sign up soon as spaces are limited.

For equipment, you will need a lamee and two electric foils with body wires to compete. If you do not have this, a limited supply of club equipment will be available for borrowing purposes. Purchase can also be arranged through Fleche Fencing or through Blade Fencing. Please talk to Jon Holtz or Jennifer Caslick for more details regarding borrowing equipment for Spooky Foil. Talk to Todd Caslick, Darren Marks or Jon Holtz regarding purchasing equipment.

Autumn is coming fast, so the time has come to register for the new fencing season. Registrations will be accepted up to the first class of your program.

Mini-Fence:

For kids six to ten years old: a fun class to introduce the sport of fencing with the use of plastic swords and masks. The goal of this program is to instill a love of sport and fencing at an early age.

This program runs for ten weeks starting Monday, September 21st, 2009 at 6:00 pm. Classes are one hour in length. Program cost is $140 per child. All fencing related equipment is supplied.

Beginner Fencing:

For those with no fencing experience, aged ten and up. The sport of fencing is introduced by learning foot-work, blade-work and basic bouting in a structured class.

Starting Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 at 6:00 pm, this six week program runs for 90 minutes a night. Program cost is $140 per fencer. All fencing related equipment will be provided.

Recreational Fencing:

For those fencers who have some fencing experience or have completed the beginner program. Practices are semi-structured to provide the most enjoyment for all participants.  Participants are encouraged to compete at local (Ontario) tournaments, but this is not a requirement.  The goal is to enjoy a lifetime of Fencing.

Starting Wednesday, September 2, 2009 Recreational Fencing runs both Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. This program runs from the beginning of September until the end of December. Program cost is $165 for the four month session. Although we have equipment available for rent, participants are encouraged to purchase their own equipment as equipment is not supplied for this program. Please talk to Jennifer Caslick to arrange equipment rentals or to register for any programs.

Competitive Fencing Team:

We intend to field a Competitve Fencing Team this year to compete in local Ontario tournaments. Further details will be provided prior to Septemberfest. If you are interested in joining the XEL Competitive Fencing Team, please talk to Head Coach, Jonathon Holtz. If you wish to be part of the XEL team, you must register for Septemberfest which is scheduled for Saturday, September 12th, 2009. See the link below for more information on Septemberfest.

A competitive fencing licence is required to compete in this tournament at a cost of $50, in addition to the tournament fee. The competitive licence is only required to be paid once per fencing calendar year (September to August) and must be purchased prior to Septemberfest. Talk to Jennifer Caslick in order to arrange for a competitive licence for this year.

Other Fencing Programs:

We also offer programs in Wheelchair Fencing, high school gym classes as well as individual lessons. Please talk to Jennifer Caslick if you are interested in any of these programs.

For participants in all programs, please wear long athletic pants, t-shirt, and non-marking athletic shoes. Water is also recommended.

A $15 fee is included in the price quoted for each program. This fee registers the fencer with the provincial and federal fencing organizations — the OFA and CFF respectively – with which Excelsior is affiliated. This fee is only required to be paid once per year during the fencing calendar (September to August).
